About Us / Press

The seeds of Twice were sown in 2005 when, having made hot water bottle covers from old blankets for her children, Caroline Hoyer Millar started to sell them at fairs and sales locally.   More designs followed, the business grew and in 2006 the Twice website was launched.

In the early days, the business was all about recycling of vintage fabrics and pieces and the aim was very much to run it around the family and not the other way round, but as the children grew older and more independent, Caroline was able to slowly expand the business and it took on an added impetus after a few chance encounters.   After meeting the owner of the last major linen mill in Scotland and and the owner of the last deerskin tannery in the UK, Caroline realised just how often people she worked with could be described as the last of their kind.   A mission was born - to work with traditional makers, materials and designs to develop the Twice range.    Not only do these manufacturers produce goods and materials of extraordinarily high quality but so often a traditional design does a better job than contemporary versions and more often than not looks much nicer too.

You will now find a wide range of homeware, gardenware, accessories, clothing and fabrics, all of which have some link with tradition through their manufacture, material or design - or, as we like to say, have 'tradition in the making'.    You can find us through our website, mail order catalogues or at our first shop, in St Andrews, Scotland.
